1) What areas of growth can a person experience in puberty? How can this stage of life be used to develop character and maturity?
ReplyDeleteAreas of growth at puberty are physical, spiritual, intellectual, and socio-emotional (Luke 2:52). These areas are at interplay aiming for holistic growth. Specifically, determining identity is needed to develop character and maturity. As a teen able to identify his identity (hopefully in Christ), purpose, and where he can belong - his character and maturity slowly follows.
2) Redirection of growth means accepting new skills and breaking out of your comfort zone. What are the things that help you break free from your comfort zone?
I grew up in a disciplined and hardworking environment. In my teen years, I've always hold on to a saying 'do the things you don't want to do now, so you can do the things you want later', this helped and pushed me to pursue my heart's desire and goals which entails going out from comfort zone. Realizing always, that at the end of it, it's always going to be worth it.
3) How can career guidance help a person during this period?
Career Guidance is very vital at puberty stage by providing tools that can help an individual decide and process his thoughts. I realized that in determining career/course, it is important to know oneself - desire, personality, skillset, environment, experiences, etc. Then as you seek the Lord and his will for your life, career choices are not the end goal but rather a means to glorify Him.

1) What areas of growth can a person experience in puberty?
ReplyDeleteSeveral areas in a teenager’s life are growing during this phase. First, mentally, their critical thinking skills is developing. They can now process abstract thoughts more clearly and logically and can work on problems higher difficulty. Second, their sexuality is evolving. They become interested with the opposite sex and into having relationships more than friendship. This comes with the development of their physical bodies. Their social world is also expanding and has become more important to them than other relationships.
How can this stage of life be used to develop character and maturity?
Puberty is a guiding stage. Parents should have started developing character from the beginning of life. I see teenage years as years of check-up time, to see if the teenager was able to capture the characters that his parents wanted to teach him. During his younger years, the parents probably used reward-and-consequence type of teaching him. I believe that in the teenage years, the parents would add more like deeper conversations, intentional experiences and involvement of the teenager. Deeper conversation allows listening in both the side of the parents and the teenager. This goes the same with sharing of thoughts and opinions regarding the concerns-at-hand. Intentional experiences mean the parents intentionally get themselves updated with the happenings in their teenager’s life and grab opportunities of guidance and teachings. It also means creating that experience for the teenager to have a first-row seat of the character or the maturity that the parents want him to develop. Involvement of the teenager refers to having him participate in the decision-making whether that is about what would be the proper consequence or what activities can the family work on.
2) Redirection of growth means accepting new skills and breaking out of your comfort zone. What are the things that help you break free from your comfort zone?
a) My desire to be effective at my work. Technology has been a challenge for me before. I graduated college knowing very little about Word, Excel, etc. and was typing very slow. Knowing that technology would move things faster, I strive to learn and continuously learning. In fact, I and my team discovered features of our CRM at work which is found very useful by another team.
b) the realization that I am responsible with the choices that I make for myself. A part of accepting my being an adult is releasing myself from blaming my family of how I have become. For instance, we were not taught to take care of our physical bodies and we did not talk about God at home. I took the responsibility to go jogging in the morning when I was in college. I also opened myself in learning about God from other venues.
3) How can career guidance help a person during this period?
During teenage years, career guidance can provide the venues for self-exploration and goal direction. One of the goals of career guidance should be to help the teenager match his skills, interests, values and strengths to possible careers to pursue in the future. This propels the teenager to think, “what are my skills, what am I really interested in, what am I being called to do?” In career guidance, the teenager is given the opportunity to out a spotlight on creating direction, not only with regards to courses in college or future jobs, but with life as a whole. As counselors, we do see career as not simply something to do for compensation, but rather a lifestyle and meaning in life. Helping the teenager set goals is pushing him in taking steps towards accomplishing the meaning of his life.
