Sociology Basic

 I. Introduction

Sociology is the study of people in society and their relationships in society. People can be identified in their groups or sociological units. Structures of society help people identify their positions and needs in life.

However, does society limit a person's full potential and freedom in pursuing his potential. In connection with guidance and counseling, does the school limit the potential of its students with the faculty that are assigned to them.

    1. As a new student, I would like to describe PGSCE as an institution where Christians like me can learn and apply new ideas from their new approach of teaching secular understanding of specific mastery which integrate biblical relevance and principles. With the current situation wherein classes are virtually done, one of the policies that would unfold my potential as a social learning individual is allowing us to express our pre-understanding to certain topics and concepts through sharing of ideas and reporting.

    2. Social interaction is vital to learner's mental and emotional need. As Aristotle says, "Man by nature is a Social-animal". Indeed no man is an island. People need people. With the pandemic around us socialization as we usually know it would be unsafe. However, we could still interact together virtually. We can laugh together virtually, we can cry together virtually, we can learn together virtually, we can do some things together virtually, etc. It sounds really strange but we need to be domesticated with the existing condition in order for us to be more mentally and emotionally healthy.

    1) I am serving as the Academic Affairs Lead for Homeschool Global (HG) with School Accreditations from Victory Christian International, The Masters Academy (PH) and Wellspring Christian Family Schools (US).
The current tagline of HG for families is 'Learn Better' and 'Pursuing what matters', wherein there is an intentionality in offering homeschooling to pursue holistic education - taking prime in character and biblical values formation; flexible & personalized learning - various option of curriculum and teaching strategy according to the pace & strength of the learners.
There is a highlight on growth mindset culture ever since I joined the school/community. That learning is continuous, not only for the student, the parent-teacher, as well as for the staff.
Learn Team ensures to accommodate individual family queries, personalized curriculum planning, and support in various co-curricular & skills classes of each students.

    2) First and foremost, by creating a genuine, healthy and accepting space to learners is a must. Currently we have this at our High School Group - High Unite, Learn Groups, Advisory meet-ups, and upcoming Guidance Office Psychoeducational classes. As mentioned in Q1, we are intentionally a christian community, hence there is an understanding & acceptance for each individual, which I think matters most in learners today. They need to be heard, valued, and recognized. We can improve social interaction by exerting efforts especially at this pandemic on online workshop with breakouts (smaller groups), counseling and consultation with Advisors (one-on-one), and direct support & equipping with the parents/families of the learners to understand and grow family dynamics better.

  3. 1) Describe your school or institutions of learning? What policies are in placed to let students grow in their potential?
Ours is homeschooling. Our families actually have the flexibility to design their own children’s learning parameters. They are made to pursue what matters to them. For instance, they can allot half day for academic work and the other half for something parents want their child to grow in, may that be professional ballet rehearsals or painting classes. Moreover, a homeschooling parent can tap on his child’s observed potentials and interests and utilize them in their learning process. Example, a spatially intelligent student is required by her parent to role play a historical lesson in Social Studies, instead of writing it down.
    2) How will you improve a schools social interaction in which students are more mentally and emotionally healthy?
In our scenario, I find it important for our institution to emphasize to our parents their power, as homeschooling parents, and responsibility to create experiences that promote mental and emotional health. For instance, if it is important for them for their children to develop others-oriented lifestyle, they should ensure that their children meet and interact with people of different walks of life, especially, those in need. Instead of the notion of “protecting my child against bullies, that is why I homeschool”, we should emphasize to parents how to maximize unwanted experiences as moments to grow in emotional aspect.
