Early Christian Thought
I. Introduction
St. Augustine
was one of the early Christian theologians and philosophers that believers can
learn many things about guidance and counseling. Christian thought deals with knowing who we
are and the decisions to make that change.
St. Augustine
conversion to Christ is one of the things that guidance counselors can use in
helping people. Self- awareness and self-realization is a starting point of making
a right decision for change.
1. Read and reflect on the prayer of St. Augustine.
O Lord my God, my sole hope, help me to believe and never to cease seeking
you. Grant that I may always and ardently seek out your countenance. Give me
the strength to seek you, for you help me to find you and you have more and
more given me the hope of finding you.
Bishop Augustine

1. A. Augustine's prayer reflects an attitude of longingness, humility and hopefulness.
B. Modeling is very important as first step in influencing and leading others/students. As educators, may we have that desire to get to know Jesus alone and long for His presence to fill our lives. Recognizing that we cannot do it on our own and entrusting our lives to Him alone. Learners can catch this countenance even before we teach or speak of the attitude. Then as we consistently show genuinely care and give opportunity for learners to be heard - they'll be more open to listen to advices, and willing to realize that longingness and need that only God can fill.
2. Usually, people are just tired or do not have the time to self-reflect (thinking about thinking). Nowadays, we'd rather pop a netflix show or browse on social media for temporary and quick diversion rather than facing certain feelings and situation. Giving an opportunity for a person to reflect on his life and recognize emotions he may be feeling - even just by simple conversation, or concretely listing it down - can help a lot in realizing some things, if indeed there is a real challenge/problem needed to address, or only a matter of accepting and growing on maturing.

A. What is the attitude of the prayer?
-It is highly noticeable in St. Augustine’s prayer his attitude of meekness and complete dependence on God.
B. How can this attitude be taught to students?
-As a values education teacher, I always believe that attitude is caught instead of being taught. I can only provide my learners the theories and concepts of the specific attitude they ought to be but it is how I live with it and act on it is the essence of it all. As they say, “walk the talk”.
2. What activities can you do to bring about self-realization to an individual?
-One of the activities that I think best to bring about self-realization to an individual is to have a “Retreat”. Before the pandemic we do retreat in school and church as part of the calendar activity. However, due to Covid19 the said activity is cancelled primarily in schools. But I believed that we can still bring the person to self-evaluation, examination, realization by attending and carefully listening to their concerns in life. Through this we could provide them with real situations and contemplative questions that would eventually bring them to self-realization.
A. What is the attitude of the prayer?
ReplyDeleteThere is the attitude of submission to God – believing in Him and always seeking Him entails full submission. There is also full dependency on Him for everything and that humbleness that we even need, from Him, the energy to seek for His will, to get to know Him better and closer.
B. How can this attitude be taught to students?
The attitude of submission, dependency and humbleness to seek God at all times- there may be a need to intentionally explore the students’ view of God and how their relationships are with Him. From here, we can touch on their faith as they share their personal struggles and present concerns. It would be nice if we can help them develop the habit of prayer, and genuine interest to get to know God more and more each day. It would be nice that, when we ask our clients to work on a counseling assignment (write a journal, etc.), we incorporate reading the Bible and connecting a passage to their present concerns. This way, they will see some connection and the need to really submit to God’s words, pray about it and seek for His guidance before deciding on a solution.
Sorry po, this was from me :)
