Starting Points in Philosophy

 I. Introduction

Philosophy is defined as love of wisdom. From an etymological standpoint, there are 2 words that provides a starting point of understanding philosophy.

Philea means love. However, the greek word denotes love for a friend or neighbour. Love for a friend or neighbor means not only an absence of harm but a compassionate connection to a person.

Sophia means wisdom. However, wisdom is not an exact idea but a compounded that carries insights, experiences and even discernment. It appeals to be practical and reasonable.

Bringing these ideas, Philosophy might mean a love of wisdom for your fellow man, the practice of knowledge for the benefit of a friend or a person. etc.

Technically, Philosophy is the practice of searching for meaning with the realities of life and its elements.

Philosophy seeks to understand life and thus make a person wise.

II. Activity

1) How can philosophy make you wise?

2) How will you know that  a person has wisdom?

  1. 1. Philosophy make me wise when it leads me to better understand the existence of things.

    2. A wise person is the one who sincerely apply in his life the things that he learnt from both theoretical and experience.

    1. As you develop love for wisdom (philosophy), you will want to know and pursue wisdom and hopefully achieve wisdom in the process.
It can lead a person to assess the quality of experience and make good judgement as needed.

    2. A wise person fears the Lord (Prov. 9:10), listen and observes intently to words, actions, and attitudes; they reflect broad experiences; relays accurate and verified knowledge; and has good judgement-beneficial results to him/herself and the society he/she belongs.
I personally observed the wise persons that I looked up to are often selfless, they freely share what they know, listens, and does not dominate the discussion. They usually exhibit a growth mindset as well - as I remember Socratic paradox of 'I know that I know nothing', following the 'law of the learner' always aiming to understand.

  3. 1) How can philosophy make you wise?
Basing on the mentioned definition: philosophy being the practice of knowledge for the benefit of a friend or a person, and knowledge, pertaining to wisdom that comes from insights, experiences and discernment, Philosophy allows one to seek how to be of help/ service or how to be productive for others. Practicing knowledge that is advantageous for others makes one wise.
    2) How will you know that a person has wisdom?
I would say that a person who is wise chose his behavior and manners of speaking in a way that is aligned to his values and beliefs in life. For instance, one who values respect, would speak respectfully towards those who he is speaking: ensuring to talk in an understandable manner, avoiding prejudicial words, and with appropriate tone.
