Moral Reasoning

 I. Introduction

Moral reasoning is supposedly based on logical thinking. However, moral reasoning includes one's belief and biases. How can a person be objective with this moral reasoning?

There are many situations that a person has a strong of moral reasoning in terms of religious, political and other sociological components. The recent scenario of a French teacher being beheaded for teaching freedom of speech has incurred the wrath of a religious community.

Moral reasoning supposedly has a component of social justice. But social justice is not absolute in the world today.

    Moral Dumbfounding:
    1. The recent uproars of the President to the VP Leni Robredo's actions when the typhoon destroyed a lot of homes in northern part of Luzon.
    2. The decision-making of the secretary of the Department of Education that almost shows no concerns for the welfare of the students' struggles.

How can a person be aware that his moral reasoning is flawed?

When we thought that our decisions were right but it turns out to be wrong in every possible way. It just shows that our moral reasoning is not always right and each people have their own distinct moral reasoning that can be used to describe a person's characteristic.

    - One of the example of moral dumbfounding that has happened in the Philippine government today is the implementation of barrier in motorcycles even though the driver of the motorcycle and the passenger both live in the same house. They push through the barrier implementation even though they cannot defend why they are going to push through the implementation and it is basically more accident prone. After several days of implementation of barrier, they ceased it. Citizen who bought barriers and made barriers for their motorcycles is now useless. Another dumbfounding event happened is the is dolomite "white sand" issue in Manila Bay. There are so many cons to that project but they still implement that even though they receive backlash from the citizens.

    3. How can a person be aware that his moral reasoning is flawed?

    - I think a person can be aware that his moral reasoning is flawed if someone points it out or if he opened himself to other reasoning and widened his view or perspective and not only based his reasoning on his emotions. Also if there is a situation that after making a decision, you then regret making that decision because it turn out to be wrong or not appropriate and then you realized that your reasoning in that decision making is flawed.

    - Presidential Spoke person Harry Roque's Visit on Boracay Beach, because he said that Boracay is now allowed for visits, and he goes to visit then. But he didn't realize that there are many people, that are not,

    3) How can a person be aware that his moral reasoning is flawed?

    - A person can be aware if their moral reasoning is flawed, if they are thinking of the solution for the problem, without concerning the other variables that may encounter on doing the solution, if they wanted to push those ideas so that, the problem can be solved.

-One of the examples I can think of is the act of the white beach in the manila bay, even though they cannot defend the topic itself on why they chose dolomite. Where dolomite is known to be a hazard to individuals.

for the second one I am not quite sure if its moral dumbfounding but the controversy on how our President Duterte portrayed his action on past typhoon Ulysses. Where his party is keep on defending his action of not attending or stating an address for his people being flooded up until days that have passed where the typhoon can be no longer felt on most places.

    * How can a person be aware that his moral reasoning is flawed?
I think the only way a person can be aware that he is flawed is first through interaction and socializing and someone making a point on how he is flawed. The second part which is the hardest part , is the acceptance that you are flawed and restating your own moral reasoning base on how you fix that flaw

    - The recent issue regarding the birthday party of PNP Chief Debold Sinas clearly shows how he and several others violated several quarantine rules wherein it is clear that the said man should be punished. However, punishment was nowhere to be found and several nonsense excuses where given such as to just forgive what he did.

    - Several photos of Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque shows him also violating quarantine rules. And like the former example stated, no punishments were given despite the clear violations. Excuses were also stated by the spokesperson such as there is no violation since those are dolphins he was with and not people when photos clearly shows him with other people sans any protective equipment.

    3. How can a person be aware that his moral reasoning is flawed?
    - If your moral reasoning is looking down on others and stepping on their pride, beliefs, tradition, and confidence, then that is one way to know if your moral reasoning is flawed. Another one is if it does not seem to be for the greater good, then it is most likely just for yourself and is considered selfish.

(1st Example): When Pres. Duterte once said "We will not dodge our obligation to fight for human rights” but then contradict it when he also said this statement “I say to the human rights, I don't give a shit with you"

(2nd Example): Again when Pres. Duterte sent a pre-recorded message during the Department of Justice's Human Rights Summit "This affirms our serious commitment in honoring and fulfilling our treaty obligations and prioritizing the human rights agenda" but also him "I don't care about human rights" urging cops to shoot and kill.

He is so consistent of being inconsistent and unable to defend his judgements and decisions with reasons. It's so sad that the government we have has no moral ascendancy to defy the human rights' crisis.

    2. How can a person be aware that his moral reasoning is flawed?

    - I'm going to take this as an example, sometimes in an argument when someone makes you feel defensive, try to consider what they're saying. If your reasons just kept on repeating because of you being biased and you're not thinking rational anymore, maybe there's something wrong about your reasons. Just listen on the other side, you don't have to agree with him/her. Try to be a little more self-aware and both of you will have a good argument as a result.

They even said it can be used to help ease Mental Illnesses which isn't even true to some extend.

    - The uncaring decision of the DEPED for students' hardship despite the pandemics lingering effects to the Pilipino families. They even asked to do the petition when classes finally started and the students already bought what they needed to do and attend classes, literally months after the students and even teachers said it earlier before classes even begun.

    3) How can a person be aware that his moral reasoning is flawed?

    - A person is aware of their reasoning. As such, they are capable of identifying if it becomes flawed or not. On how, it can occur through the influence of feelings/emotions, which gravitates the choices to another or when a person tries to resolve a problem without thinking more possible choices in resolving it. Mañanita Issue - Back in May 8, PNP Chief Debold Sinas held a birthday party in which more than 30 people can be seen in the photographs, some weren't wearing masks, and everyone broke the standard protocol of not holding large groups of people during the pandemic. Was the PNP Chief and said partygoers apprehended or condemned for breaking a nationally implemented strict rule during the time when the pandemic was prevalent? No. They were not. In fact, even the President himself decided to turn a blind eye at their behavior. Now this PNP Chief got promoted to be a General and declared that any form of social gathering present during the holidays is prohibited and that partygoers will get arrested.

b.) Duterte's Realization regarding Covid Testing - It's been 9 months and counting that the Philippines and its people are suffering from the Covid-19 pandemic and just recently, December 8, 2020, did President Rodrigo Duterte just realized how important it is to perform mass testing in the country, and that he wants the test kits to be cheaper. During those 9 months, it has been obvious that Duterte's concern and budget went more on the military's side, rather than in the Research & development and Health side. It was also evident that Duterte preferred using the test kits he bought from other countries, especially China, rather than patronizing the cheap UP-Made Covid-19 testing kits that were readily available.

[1] When President Duterte appointed Gen. Debold Sinas as PNP Chief. Despite of his issues regarding breaking the rules of quarantine, he was still promoted from his position instead addressing his issue and many people even defended his unethical action. Funny how they promoted someone who can’t even follow some basic rules.

[2] The project of DENR which is the controversial dolomite sand or artificial white sand in Manila Bay. This is dumbfounding situation because we are all aware of the pandemic that should be a number one priority of the government but instead, they wasted a fund for a project that doesn’t make sense. They even push their projects regardless of the warning of the environmentalists and experts of the dangers it can bring. The project also received backlash from the netizens after they claimed that the dolomite sand will help people with mental health problems such as depression which is completely unreliable.

I think by means of socializing and interacting with other people and knowing their perspectives. When certain issue arises, and you cannot defend your reasoning because you know that other individual is making sense on his reasoning. Our moral reasoning can be considered flawed when many people opposes to you and you are somehow hurting someone or something. And through listening and accepting their judgment you would realize that your moral reasoning is flawed. A person needed to change his perspective and be open in every new knowledge. We also need to educate them and help them to reflect to their wrong and be a much better individual.

They also said that they are ready with that modules.

    3. How can a person be aware that his moral reasoning is flawed?

Moral reasoning is what each of us individually and collectively should do to cope with inner and outer conflicts. They are usually opportunities for putting into practice what parents and teachers have inculcated. I would also say that reason can only be used by people who are aware of their own feelings, the other party's feelings, the uncontrollable parameters, habits and weaknesses of the people involved, the nature of the situation itself. Reason sometimes fails because people fail to take into account all the factors involved. And the purpose of putting forth reason must not be to decide who was morally wrong but what could have been done instead, better solution, a feasible solution, an acceptable solution. The most common, frequent, way is through experience when the consequences of flawed moral reasoning force a reckoning. If your reasoning was flawed in the first place, you’re much more likely to learn your lessons the hard way.

A good family upbringing is the best way to avoid mistakes but you’ll make plenty anyway

    3. How can a person be aware that his moral reasoning is flawed?
We people make decision based on our morality. Sometimes we cannot determine if it is right for us. A person can determine that his reasons are flawed if it turns out to hurt other people instead of making good to others.

(1)putting "white sand" in manila bay. they said that it is good for mental health as well as serves as tourist attractions without realizing that instead of allotting money in this project they should be allotted this money in more useful things especially in our situation right now we should be wise on where should we put the budget and aside from that the dolomite that is used in the construction of white sand is hazardous because it contains heavy metal which is not good. they only think what they think is right not minding the consequences and effects of their actions in a lot of people.

(2)The late realization of importance of mass testing of covid 19. the quarantine had been almost 9 months and President duterte only realize the importance of mass testing just recently. when the covid cases are continually increasing people ask for mass testing every now and then to be able to trace and know who has covid 19 to be treated and quarantine immediately so that the spread of virus will be contained. but the government and President Duterte didn't listen because as for them testing kits are expensive and we can't afford to have tons of it because of lack of budget. but right now he suddenly realized the importance of mass testing in combating the corona virus.

    2. How can a person be aware that his moral reasoning is flawed.
a person can be aware that his moral reasoning is flawed when he reflect in his reason and decision and able to evaluate the reason he made if it's good or bad whether what he did is only good for him or good for others as well.

    - President Duterte approves the recommendation of the Department of Education to conduct pilot implementation or dry run of face-to-face classes in select schools in low-risk areas as of January. Even without mass testing, the government still decided to implement dry run face-to-face classes that once again fail its people as they neglect to look upon the welfare of everyone.

    - Despite a ban on mass gatherings while Metro Manila was on lockdown, dozens of National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) cops gathered to celebrate the birthday of their chief, Major General Debold Sinas, in Camp Bagong Diwa on May 8. It clearly shows how unbiased the government is, several rules are being violated due to the said salu-salo and none of them received any punishments from the government.

    3. How can a person be aware that his moral reasoning is flawed?
    - In every decision a person opted to make, whether or not it is right or wrong, he is aware of it. Thus, awareness has something to do with acceptance. Because not all the time a person is morally correct just because he thought he is even if he’s not. Accepting that you can’t be right all the time shows that you are aware that your reasoning may not or may be flawed and if it is, you make adjustments to it, for the betterment of everyone.

Even though Vice president Leni Robredo claims that she never said “Where is the president?”, President Duterte still harshly criticized her for questioning his whereabouts wherein he claims that the reason of this is because he is present at the virtual plenary with other ASEAN leaders as Typhoon Ulysses ravaged several parts of Luzon.

(2nd example) – When the national government and the Department of Health didn’t consider the call of everyone to closed or temporarily ban our airlines for the countries who are affected of COVID19 earlier this year. Their reason is because it may taint or affect the relationship of our country to those countries.

    2. How can a person be aware that his moral reasoning is flawed?

    (1) I think the Moral Dumbfounding did exist during the time when the Government announced that people are allowed to go outside or simply the locked down was being lifted even though the number of cases are still increasing. I saw this as an example because why would the Government risk the people's life just for the sake of the economy and more importantly why this action was made during the time that the number of cases is high and not the time wherein we only have a few positive cases in the country.

    (2) Another example is that when President Duterte still appointed Sinas as the PNP Chief. We are all aware that before Sinas was being appointed to his position he violated a rule on this pandemic and that was being implemented by them and that is avoid gatherings and have social distancing. I see this as a Moral Dumbfounding because how could President Duterte still favor him although he is aware that Sinas failed to follow a simple rule.

Personally, I think it's just a waste of time and money when there are many other more important things to prioritize first but they didn't.

Second is when President Duterte accused VP Leni to be competing against him in terms of helping the victims of the typhoons. First of all, the priority must be helping your people during the times of calamity and not criticizing the responsive actions of your colleagues. Calamities are not the right time for weighing who is and who isn't doing their jobs right. Nor there will be a time for that, as long as you're doing what you must do as someone in that position.

    A. It happened last May when Health Secretary Francisco Duque said that the country was already in the middle of its "second wave" or another surge of COVID-19 cases. Concerns of the senators over the health chief's pronouncement were expressed questioning how did it happen.

    B. The restoration of Manila bay that resorted to focus on external beautification which is actually pretended and artificial, instead of genuine rehabilitation.

    3. How can a person be aware that his moral reasoning is flawed?

    - I think one of example of Moral Dumbfounding when Secretary Harry Roque said that we beat COVID 19 because he didn't enlighten that we won in the prediction of Up Research that Covid raise up to 80k by in the end of the june so that's why i think his statement is dumbfounded because his statement is can give effect to the mindset of each and everyone that can result that people haaving confidence to go out despite there are threat of Covid 19

    - The more important is when General Debolt Sinas became the PNP chief that's why i think it is super dumbfounding becaese despite his Mañanita or birthday celebration that they disobeyed the rules and implementation of government towards to fight for COVID 19 that's why i think it is super dumbfounded because despite his wrongdoing ang disobey the law, he became PNP Chief and there are no charges that complain them not unlike small people that if they disobey the law they like an animals thst hurting them and putting the jail. So i think right now if you have power and money you can control anything.

    3. How can a person be aware that his moral reasoning is flawed?

    - I think you can say that the moral reasoning of person ids flawe by his action and decision in life that affecting everyone that his all doing is only for her and not for others and also if his intention is not good that can harm and insult other people that's why i think moral reasoning can develop by thinking very carefully and don't let the emotion handle it because your moral reasoning can be flawed.

    - Debold Sinas' Mañanita party during the covid pandemic breaking the quarantine protocols, but the situation was brushed off. Leaving people questioning whether the quarantine protocol was a joke or not.

    - The dolomite beach fiasco, I understand why they'd want to do it, but the timing was just horrid. The budget spent on the dolomite beach would have been better off on COVID relief efforts to better the situation of our nation.

    3. How can a person be aware that his moral reasoning is flawed?

    - One way is to be pointed out by someone else. The other is to make a mistake. Once a person makes a mistake because of his judgement, he will start to question. Then, he may be able to realize that his moral reasoning is flawed. Once he sees the fruits of his reasoning, he may work to make it better to make sure he doesn't make the same mistake twice.

-PNP Chief Sinas celebration party that violated pandemic protocols such as social distancing, etc. As PNP Chief himself, he should be the first one following his own orders.
-White sand Manila Bay, it was a good idea for the people but it was at the wrong time, we are still at a pandemic and much more sectors needed money more than the manila bay project.

    3. How can a person be aware that his moral reasoning is flawed?
    - a person will be aware that his moral reasoning is flawed once he/she realizes that every action he does turns out to be negative to him and his surroundings. Also when someone else tells and shows him that his reasoning is wrong. And that someone is respected to have good reasoning.

    (a) The accusation of President Rodrigo Duterte to Vice President Leni Robredo to be competing against him by helping the victims and going to certain affected regions personally amidst the typhoon Ulysses therefore attracting rumors that the President wasn't there during the dire times of need. During the president's speech, Duterte said bashful things about Leni because he sees that Leni is competing with him.

    (b) Department of Education's decision about the online classes since it is clear that we are not ready to implement it, inconsideration for the students who may be late because of different situations which won't be able to cope up with the current procedures, and the decision for the upcoming year --- allowing for us to have a dry run for the face-to-face classes. After all, we are not sure if it's really safe for the students to go outside.

    3. How can a person be aware that his moral reasoning is flawed?

    - There are many ways for you to find out if your moral reasoning is flawed. Experience along with people around whom you can communicate with, can widen your thoughts and perspectives about things. Taking this into accounts, you'll be able to learn to find loopholes in your reasoning and try to defend whether it is the right one or the wrong one. As the saying goes, "No man is an island". We need other people for us to experience different things in life. During that situation, you can say that there's more to things than it really seems.

    - The first thing I remembered when I learned the meaning of dumbfounding was the is about the divider or the plastic barriers in motorcycle. A lot of people are questioning about it because the policy is the only person that use motorcycle is the husband and wife, and then they want to use a plastic barrier for them to protect themselves in sharing of COVID. But if we think it logically, it is useless because those people that use plastic barriers are the ones who sleeps together at night. This topic results to waste a lot of money because many riders are investing their money for them to continue their job.
    - This was the most controversial issue in the Duterte’s administration, the issue about Extra Judicial Killings (EJK). They know what the truth is but because of emotions and other factor, there are some cases that shows in national tv that some of the Police take advantage their job to kill some drug users.
    3. How can a person be aware that his moral reasoning is flawed?
    - Some person aware that their moral reasoning is flawed when there is a strong person that can tell it to him/her, because we all know that all of us have a pride and ego so it is very difficult to admit that we are logically wrong. In some aspect, person can be aware that his/her moral reasoning is flawed by sensing the environment. Because like me I am aware in my environment when I feel there something I felt wrong I will think hardly about that, it is just like self-realizing because not all the time there is someone that can talk to you straight to the point.

-The Manila Bay Dolomite. At these times of pandemic, the need for funding for the medical area is much more needed than the beautification of the Manila bay where it can get destroyed by the upcoming typhoons making the funds wasted.

-PNP Chief General Debold Sinas, the irony when the government implemented no mass gathering where it includes parties or celebrations during the pandemic, while he managed to get away scot-free, those with no power or not in the government gets immediately gets punished.

    3) How can a person be aware that his moral reasoning is flawed?
-The said person can be aware if he's either open-minded about his actions or someone called him/her out of it and accept that he/she made a mistake. This will make them reflect on their actions and improve on their flawed decisions.

Since Moral Dumbfounding is defined as the "people reach strong moral conclusions that they cannot logically defend." and considering that a person decides based on his internal biases or outside pressures. Therefore, on the Philippine government today , there are a lot of Moral Dumbfounding , and they are the following: 1. When Duque said that the government can handle the novel coronavirus.; 2. Duterte late realizations about covid-19 testing. It is involved in Moral Dumbfounding since Duque concluded that the government is competent and capable enough of fighting the covid-19 without even trying to put a defense on the community. When asked, it is not logically defended because we are still facing the pandemic knowing that he already concluded that the government is "competent" enough. Lastly, Duterte concluded that vaccination is the very "helpful" one to fight the covid-19 but didn't seek for the mass testing enough. And coming up with the late realizations that it must be one of the solution to perform.

    3. How can a person be aware that his moral reasoning is flawed?

A person can be aware that his moral reasoning is flawed when they are questioned the What, Why and How questions. For example, what is your reason on having a divorce and abortion. Why do you want it or not. And How did you came up with this ideas. Moral reasoning simply means on choosing what the person think is right and/or wrong.

    b. Implementing Motorcycle barriers we all know that primary user of motorcycle in the middle of pandemic are usually husband and wife; as we see this thing, even though they have barrier in motorcycle there still sharing the same bed, having physical contact so the barrier is clearly useless and should not be implemented.

    3. How can a person be aware that his moral reasoning is flawed?

    1. President Duterte publicly threaten the Filipinos who's planning to have a revolution against his administration.
    2. President Duterte verbally attacked Senator Antonio Trillanes due to the
criminal remarks about the war on drugs.

How can a person be aware that his moral reasoning is flawed?
Moral reasoning is flawed if it is purely based on temporary emotions, irrational and illogical thinking. If a moral reasoning became false reasoning. There must be at least a touch of values, realistic consideration, and the truth, not just purely temporary emotions or just to satisfy short term needs. Moral reasoning is flawed if it leads to an action that harms others and especially thyself.

-One of the Moral dumbfounding that happens is when the government placed white sand in Manila Bay (Dolomite)they said it's going to support us in our mental well being, but it's certainly not.Instead of supporting these people, they need financial assistancein the face of this pandemic, they invest P28 million.

Let's be timely, one of the moral dumbfounding that happening here in the Philippines is the negliance of the President to the flaw of his Cabinet Member and official.
Making a quarantine violator into PNP chief, retire general as the new CEO of Philhealth is not rational at all.

    - Sec. Briones wants a dry run for the face to face classes on January 2021. Because on what she said the schools have a low risk on Covid-19 and more likely high risk on our home. Which is not suitable because it will become low risk on schools because nobody or no students comes to school because of Covid so for me this is one example of Moral dumbfounding. Only teachers and school staffs are on schools due to their work but schools have low risk because the persons who goes to school have different schedule so that the school cant be maximize.

    - 2nd example is the celebration party of PNP Chief Sinas. The government officials must be the one who will obey to the protocols during this pandemic but he violates it. It has clear motive that he violated such protocols but then he was forgiven and promoted by our President. This is also a Moral Dumbfounding.

    3. How can a person be aware that his moral reasoning is flawed?
    - By thinking rational and looking for perspective in their doings.
